Implant Treatments

Implants can be used to replace a missing tooth (using a single crown) or several missing teeth (using a bridge ) or a whole arch of teeth (using a denture stabilised on just two implants).
The pictures scrolling above show examples of each type.

Treatment for patients with a healthy mouth usually takes 3-4 months with relatively few appointments. As mentioned in the previous section (About Implants) much of the time is spent on the planning of the case between the dentist, surgeon and laboratory team. Most patients are genuinely surprised by how quickly and comfortably the implants are placed.

We have given an outline guide on the processes and stages involved below which we hope is helpful.
The treatment is carried out in 4 phases :

1. Planning

Your dentist, technician and your surgeon, Dr. Louis McArdle will usually work up a treatment plan (to suit your desires and needs) that is then agreed between you and the team.

2. Implant placement

Louis firstly raises a discrete flap or window in the gum where the implant is to be placed. The titanium implant is then inserted into the bone and the flap closed over with some sutures. Your implant is covered by a thin healing cap which rests on the gum. The implant and the bone will then fuse together over the next 2-3 months in a process called 'osseointegration'. A temporary tooth may be worn during this phase.

3. Review

Louis will check your implant has integrated at a recall visit typically 2 months after your implant is placed.

4. Restoration

Your dentist will remove the healing cap and take an impression of the implant. The healing cap is then replaced together with your temporary restoration, while your dental technician makes the replacement tooth or teeth. Usually 2 weeks later your dentist will place the restoration(crown bridge or denture) and advise on the continuing care maintenance required.
It is critically important that these are well looked after by our hygiene team to ensure their longevity and your comfort.
