Cosmetic FillingsThese are fillings that closely match the natural colour of the teeth, so preserving or enhancing your smile. Obviously, these have been used in the front teeth for years but in the posterior teeth, amalgam (metal filling) is still widely used. Amalgam fillings are actually very durable, but they do weaken the teeth and are ,of course, unsightly. They tend to look even worse with age, changing from silver to black. Tooth coloured fillings look better and also help to re inforce the remaining tooth.
In smaller cavities we use a material called composite - this is placed in layers and each layer is set c a special light. In large cavities we can still use composite but tend to find a laboratory produced ceramic is both stronger and looks even better. These are called ceramic inlays or onlays. If your smile is let down by those dark fillings or you want to know more about tooth coloured fillings please email us or call 020 8460 9742.
